Mom and baby lay in bed together

I have this memory of being a new mom. We had these yellow curtains and in the morning my bedroom would glow. The morning was the happiest time for my baby, and I loved every single morning I had with him. I was hyperaware of how limited those days would be. I remember wanting to document them, and being embarrassed to ask someone to come to my bedroom to take photos. Ten years ago, this wasn’t a thing. Or at least I didn’t know it was thing.

When I put out a model call a few months back, this is exactly what I was trying to capture. I want to provide these memories to other women. I want them to be comfortable to invite me into their homes because THESE memories are worth capturing.

Remember those sleepless nights, and the days filled with toothless smiles?  Remember how it felt like you were in the thick of it, only to look back a year later and mourn how short that season of your life was?  I do.  My husband was deployed when my children were babes, and I was sure the doggy paddling would never end.  I know what it is to live in the blur.

Documenting these details ensures you can go back to that time, if only in your mind, and see all the beauty in those moments.

She told me nursing has been a struggle for her.  She didn’t expect it.  She already knew the ropes, she already nourished a child with her body, she knew how to do this. But here she was, struggling.  Because that is motherhood isn’t it?  So instinctively easy, yet an everyday struggle.

So when I posted asking for nursing models, she thought “maybe I should document the struggle too?”  I am so glad she did.  Because I have found that something magical happens when you look at yourself through someone else’s eyes. You don’t see the flaws.  You see the beauty in your life.

Last night she emailed me and said “(the pictures) made me feel better about breastfeeding.” Photos are so much more than something to hang on your wall, or to post on your social media.  They show you the reality of your life, without filters of the stress you are feeling, or the weight you are carrying on your shoulders.  THIS is why new moms need photos.  Life goes by in a blur when you are in survival mode, so why not capture these memories?
